Frequently Asked Questions (FAQS)
Q: How long after I apply will I have to wait hear back from the Union? A: The paperwork is forwarded to the New York State Department of Labor and they set up a date for applicants to take a mandatory aptitude test. After the test is taken, the Union will call the potential candidates to set up an interview.
Q: What are the requirements for candidacy in the apprenticeship program? A: An applicant must be at least 18 years of age, have a high school diploma or GED, a resume and three letters of reference.
Q: What are the requirements of an apprentice once he or she is admitted into the program? A: An apprentice is required to attend mandatory training for four weeks on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays which is known as “pre-apprenticeship.” Once completed, the applicant becomes a registered apprentice and will be required to complete a four-year, 4100 hour program with 144 hours per year of related classroom instruction.
Q: Does an apprentice get paid while attending mandatory training/classroom activities? A: No. An apprentice starts earning a wage when he/she is called out to jobs to work alongside Journeymen as a part of their “on the job training.”
